From Setbacks to Strengths: Reframing Learning Loss

Often the term "learning loss" is accompanied by calls to "return to normal." The reality is that a return to normal is not in the best interest of all learners. How do we balance the demand for addressing "learning loss" against the realities of inequity? We are confronted with the same question Dr. Asa Hilliard posed in 1991, "Do we truly want to see each & every child in [America] develop to the peak of his or her capabilities?" The answer is a resounding yes, and to start this work we must reframe "learning loss" and challenge calls to return to normal and reclaim the past.
