Beyond the Reading Wars: Bridging the Gap for Older Students

In the large urban district where we work, 50% of test takers in 8th grade received a Below Basic score on recent NAEP exams. When most if not all of the students in a given class need reading supports in the form of Tier II interventions, districts such as ours find themselves with a Tier 1 “problem” that beckons a solution far more complex than those currently offered. Our meet up will be driven by the following questions: Are older students being forgotten in today's Reading Wars? What steps are districts, large and small, taking to support older readers? And, are we all doing enough?
