Mobile Education for the Marginalized
Thursday, March 7
9:00AM - 10:00AM
Hilton Austin Downtown Salon E
Summary
Our two projects offer education to students not covered by public education by harnessing the power of business to yield win-win outcomes for all the stakeholders instead of using the pretext of CSR. The Ishinomaki Project provides learning opportunities by distributing tablet devices for students in the tsunami disaster areas. Tablet learning has 3 strengths: it provides chances to learn anywhere with Internet connection, motivates students with a novel learning style, and can function as an educational backup system to thwart future disasters thanks to its scalability. Goocus for Wikipedia free access promotes Wikipedia usage in developing countries by using our smart Wikipedia reading app, goocus, and cooperating with the mobile careers that provide free access to Wikipedia. User growth leads to more prompt and accurate article updates, which results in the sustainable development of Wikipedia. This virtuous cycle benefits users, mobile careers and even the Wikipedia Foundation.
