A dynamic leader in arts education, Franklin Willis serves as the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Metro Nashville Public Schools, overseeing arts education initiatives that impact more than 80,000 students. With over 15 years of experience as a music educator, instructional coach, and administrator, he is committed to ensuring equitable access to impactful and engaging arts programs while fostering creative, inclusive learning experiences for all students.
As an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, Willis prepares future music educators with a focus on culturally relevant pedagogy, student engagement, and innovative teaching strategies. His expertise in urban music education and his ability to connect culture with curriculum have established him as a respected voice in the field.
Beyond his work in arts administration, Willis is a children’s book author, with titles including Edward's Rhythm Sticks and More Than a Music Teacher. He also writes elementary music curricula, coaches teachers nationwide, and designs professional learning experiences that empower educators to build student-centered, meaningful classrooms. His deep love for music was nurtured by his mother, a legacy he carries forward by using music to inspire both students and educators.
His contributions to the field have earned him national recognition, including two Emmy nominations for his work on Metro Nashville Public Schools' Every Student Known song and documentary, which received critical praise. He is also a three-time recipient of the CMA Foundation Music Teachers of Excellence Award. In 2023, he was named a Yamaha 40 Under 40 Music Education recipient, further cementing his impact on arts education.
Through his leadership, creativity, and dedication to culturally responsive teaching, Willis continues to shape the future of music education, ensuring every student has the opportunity to discover their voice through the power of the arts.
