Pauline Turner Strong is Professor of Anthropology, Provost’s Distinguished Service Professor, and Director of the Program in Native American and Indigenous Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research and teaching areas include cultural anthropology, Native American cultures and histories, and educational policy and politics. Her most recent book is American Indians and the American Imaginary: Cultural Representation Across the Centuries. She has received several University-wide teaching honors as well as awards from the Ford Foundation, Mellon Foundation, National Science Foundation (NSF), and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). She is the former director of the University of Texas Humanities Institute. Her volunteer activities include serving as the president of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) chapter at UT Austin, where she advocates for the freedom to teach, the freedom to learn, and education for the common good.
