Beneath the Mask: Autism in Education

Many autistic individuals describe experiences of “masking” their autistic traits to fit in with societal expectations, which can negatively impact mental health. The panel will share a mix of first-hand experience and clinical expertise regarding ways to disrupt systems that may perpetuate the pressure to mask. We will highlight the importance of IEP goals that align with neurodiversity principles and interventions that leverage strengths and interests of autistic individuals, including a case study on how a tabletop roleplaying game was used to foster learning, growth, and connection.
