Melissa Mahoney
Dr. Melissa Mahoney’s teaching and scholarly expertise centers on feminist economics, gender, labor, and well-being. In the classroom, she experiments with ways of translating her interests in human diversity and the complexity of human experience by exploring how students’ unique perspectives contribute to a fuller understanding of economic questions at hand. To engage students, she employs a variety of contemplative practices, including deep listening of popular music, somatic experiencing, and guided reflections. Her work in the classroom has been recognized with the University of North Carolina Asheville Award for Teaching Excellence in the Social Sciences. Mahoney earned her doctorate from The New School for Social Research and is Associate Professor of Economics at UNC Asheville.
