A national movement is attempting to transform the way that early reading instruction is taught. In the past three years alone, more than two dozen states have mandated that teachers use scientifically proven methods to teach children how to read—methods that most schools haven’t used consistently and are unfamiliar to many teachers. Experts say these changes have the potential to help millions more children become proficient readers. But can schools implement such a seismic shift in practice?
