His tenure as Legislative Director for Shapiro Linn Strategic Consulting involved pivotal policy and legislative strategy work. At the Texas Commission on Virtual Education, as Chief of Staff to Chairman Rex Gore, he played a crucial role in crafting a forward-thinking policy framework for the future of virtual education in the state.

Before the inception of DT Strategic Consulting, Thompson was at the forefront of state policy strategy with Teach Plus, empowering teachers to influence pivotal policy issues within Texas. He spearheaded the elected leadership pipeline for Texas with Leadership for Educational Equity, guiding educators toward significant elected roles. His educational journey began in the heart of rural North Carolina, where his passion for teaching high school math as a Teach For America corps member was ignited. This passion led him back to Texas, where he contributed to the foundation of KIPP Austin Collegiate public charter school, serving as a founding administrator and teacher.
