As a former teacher in an urban area high school, Melaina Wilkin quickly realized that not everyone can NOR should attend college. She always told her students they should have the skills to go if they ever want, but those same skills can be applied to other careers and training where the end goal is not a degree. She has applied that philosophy while working with educators through the College Board, Region XIII and ACC. Recently, she coordinated a joint project between a local school district and ACC Continuing Education, training and connecting graduating students with the trades industry. She is firmly committed to ensuring the needs of all students are met, not just those who want to pursue two and four year degrees. She is committed to helping improve Central Austin through her involvement with Leadership Austin Essential Class of 2013 graduate and The Junior League of Austin, where she is a sustaining member and helping the next generation of leaders.
