An elder within his tribe, Stan Rodriguez, EdD (Kumeyaay – Iipay, Santa Ysabel) is a Tribal Council Member of the Santa Ysabel Tribe, and a Board Member / Instructor at Kumeyaay Community College. Dr. Rodriguez learned the methods and culture of the Kumeyaay from his Grandmother and other Elders. A U.S. Navy veteran, he holds an MA in Human Behavior and received his doctorate degree at UC San Diego. As an educator, language teacher, and tribal singer, Dr. Rodriguez is an advocate for his community’s culture and traditions and serves in a number of advising and teaching roles in the San Diego and Native Kumeyaay communities. As a tribal legislator, he aims to improve the lives for all Iipay through economic development and cultural preservation. He appears in the Emmy-nominated KPBS documentary, “First People: The Kumeyaay”, and in 2015 he was honored as a Local Hero by the KPBS Local Heroes Project, supported by KPBS and Union Bank.
