Paula Mitchell

Fellowship Director & Teacher on Special Assignment
Agency by Design Oakland / Oakland Unified School District

I have been an Oakland Public school elementary teacher for over 20 years. My current position is as a Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA) for Maker-Centered Learning at Grass Valley Elementary school. I helped create and facilitate our maker education/project based learning program that is now being infused throughout the school TK-5. One of my greatest joys is serving in a community of color where there is rich diversity. I believe in fostering equity and providing access to high quality educational STEAM programs to historically underserved and underrepresented populations through a focus on culturally relevant making and authentic inclusion for students with disabilities.
Since I was a small child, I loved to make things, create, craft, explore, construct & deconstruct. I continue to make to this day. Some of the things that keep my creativity flowing are jewelry making, baking, and dancing.
