Yuman Hussain founded Azad India Foundation (AIF) in 1998 to provide women, adolescents and children in Kishanganj with education and life skills training. After facing backlash from her community for being the first woman to defy tradition and leave home, Yuman is determined to ensure that every girl is free to choose her future. In 2019, Malala Fund selected Yuman as a Gulmakai Champion. With her Gulmakai Network grant, Yuman holds supplemental classes in Bihar to help marginalized girls re-enter school or keep up with their coursework. She also teaches parents and school officials about gender equality and how to make schools safer for girls.
