Should Free, Public Education Start from Birth?
From the 2020 Democratic presidential primary debates and beyond, there is increasing discussion of publicly funding universal access to high-quality, paid child care — currently unaffordable for most U.S. families. The nation has long viewed universal, free public education for all children as a common good, now provided from kindergarten or first grade through high school across the country.
