Math & Engineering Teacher
McKay High School

I am a math and engineering teacher at McKay High School, a fully comprehensive title 1 high school serving 2,500 students in Salem, Oregon. I love focusing on preparing students for what’s beyond high school by providing opportunities that stretch students beyond what they believe possible! Each week we host an after-school MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) meeting. MESA has been a spring board for McKay students to go on to bigger invention opportunities and projects. We have had groups of students compete in PSU’s Clean Tech Challenge and Beta Project as well as InventOR, a state-wide college invention competition. Inspired by the success of our MESA students, a new group of students applied for a grant through the Lemelson-MIT Program with their own invention. We’re using these programs and competitions to create a culture of invention at our school.
