I'm a STEM educator with interests in informal STEM education, technology and Makerspaces. I currently work as the director of CU Science Discovery, a K-12 STEM education outreach organization at the University of Colorado Boulder. We run a variety of informal STEM education programs for pre K-12 learners, including summer camps, afterschool classes, in-school programs and Makerspace workshops, as well as teacher professional development programs. I also co-lead the Build a Better Book project, which we'll be sharing here at SXSW EDU! Build a Better Book aims to connect youth Makers in schools, libraries and community Makerspaces with the real-world need for more accessible books and games, with an emphasis on designing materials for children and teens who are blind or visually impaired. Through the project, youth develop technology skills and learn about STEM careers as they design and fabricate multi-modal books, games and learning materials that can be seen, touched and heard.
