Laurie Smith

Laurie contributes to Nesta’s thought leadership on future technologies and trends, analysing the technological, social and economic aspects of emerging developments.

Currently he is undertaking a project on the future of AI and education, horizon scans on innovation methods and the future of healthcare, and managing a project on collective intelligence and health.

He has over ten years’ experience in science and innovation policy at national academies, parliament and government. Previously he led on emerging technologies and futures at the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science, and before that led a team that investigated policy for science and innovation.

Prior to working at the Society Laurie worked at the UK Academy of Medical Sciences. This included secondments to the Department for International Development and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.

In a previous life he worked in academic publishing.
