JoAnn Groh

Paulo Freire Freedom School - Downtown

JoAnn Groh is the Co-Founder and Principal of Paulo Freire Freedom School, a middle school that uses interdisciplinary PBL as its instructional methodology and has a social justice/environmental sustainability curricular focus.

She is a national facilitator for the School Reform Initiative training educators in facilitative leadership and PLCs and is on the National Faculty for BIE training educators in project-based learning. She has also worked facilitating instructional rounds in Virginia and Oklahoma and as a Literacy Coach with the Ohio High School Transformation Initiative, a Bill and Melinda Gates/KnowledgeWorks Foundation initiative.

JoAnn received her B.A. in Political Science from Claremont McKenna College, a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law, and her teaching credential in Social Studies from Mills College. She taught humanities for over 15 years, and when her schedule permits it, she continues to work in the classroom where her passion remains.
