Judge Elizabeth Thornton Trosch has served as a District Court Judge in Mecklenburg County since 2009. She has worked collaboratively with child welfare and juvenile justice partners to create trauma-informed court practices and systems of care. She is Co-Founder and Chair of the Mecklenburg County School Justice Partnership, a collaboration between the school district, local law enforcement agencies, and courts to promote school safety and reduce unnecessary school-based referrals to the court system with community-based alternatives to arrest. She is Co-Chair of the School Disciplinary Policy Council, partnering with Charlotte Mecklenburg School District to implement supportive school disciplinary practices that reduce exclusionary discipline and its disparate impact on children of color. Judge Trosch has presented on topics including Impact of Childhood Traumatic Stress on Behavior and Learning, Building Trauma Informed Courts, and Implicit Bias at state and national conferences.
