Embracing the Language of Disability in Education
Words matter. The terminology that is used to define and describe marginalized populations can stigmatize people. We know that there is a long history of fear and discomfort around the language of disability, and yet the disability community implores us to eliminate euphemisms like "special needs." We would like to explore how teachers support parents and students through socially responsible language, and how schools can use language to promote an inclusive school climate.
