Summary

Session participants, who will have the opportunity to view the film "Hidden Figures" at SXSWedu, will deepen their understanding of the film by discussing how the filmmaker portrays the struggles and achievements of three black women mathematicians in the NASA space program. Participants will work with a discussion guide used with 10,000 Los Angeles students who viewed the film. They will also receive access to a free curriculum guide that incorporates background lessons on the civil rights movement, the Cold War and the space race, as well as STEM lessons that teach students about orbits and conic sections. Finally, they will strategize ways to encourage girls in STEM subjects.
