Summary

In this talk, we review the key findings of the SMASH research project funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). This 3-year NIH R01 grant, initially conceptualized and executed as a Quantified Self (QS) project in Silicon Valley, was an attempt to understand the mechanism of social network influence in health outcomes through multidimensional and semantic data mining approaches. Over time, it became quite apparent that a lot of the algorithms in predicting future health behaviors and understanding the constructs and SN structures of effective patient engagement were equally applicable to the higher-education space.
