Summary

Three years ago, the New York City Department of Education launched a school design project based in design thinking methodologies. The network of schools—EPIC—was launched with a distinct focus on issues of race and gender. The network as grown to encompass 4 schools. Two members of the original team—Harvey Chism and John Duval—look back on the intersection of design thinking and race in school design and raise the simple question: Is design thinking as it's currently practiced racist?
