Summary

#SCFirstGen

First generation students are the first in their families to pursue advanced degrees at the undergrad or graduate level. These students often feel disenfranchised from friends and family, who do not always understand why they are pursing higher education, and express feelings of social isolation. Some experience confusion regarding the cultural norms of the academy, which can lead to poor performance or withdrawal. Simmons started a First Generation Mentor program where faculty (who were also first gen students) are paired with students to provide ongoing support. First gen students report feeling more connected to their program or university and faculty enjoy these relationships as well.
