Children as young as three and four can process how skin color correlates to the way people are treated. How can schools apply principles from movements such as #blacklivesmatter and #dreamers to talk about discrimination in a way that is both authentically complex and age appropriate? With data and video footage examples from multiple preK-1st grade classrooms across the U.S., this session addresses the role of educators and developers in creating entrances for young children to talk about racial inequalities. These entrances must value both young children’s sophisticated drive for content as well as the importance of taking seriously the experiences and concerns of people of color.
