Bauhaus-Universität Weimar - Professor of Visual Comms

Summary

Almost 100 years ago Johannes Itten conceived of a foundation course at the Bauhaus which, in one form or another, is still used at most art and design schools. With this method, aspects of formgiving are supposedly learned long before they are needed for assignments. At the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar we use something which one might call “just-in-time learning”. Basics are not taught in one go at the beginning of studies, they are rather integrated into project-based assignments throughout the entire study period. This is much more labour-intensive for teachers, but leads in the long run to graduates better prepared for independent professional practice or further study.
