Empathy is an essential 21st century skill; it is central in social-emotional learning and a foundational stage in user-centered design. However, it can be unclear how to authentically incorporate empathy into academic content. The Field Museum sees empathy as a truly academic practice. Coupled with inquiry frameworks like C3, building empathy helps students better understand people and places distant both geographically and chronologically. We approach inquiry-based social studies content through three empathic lenses: historical empathy, cultural empathy, and social empathy. These three lenses draw important distinctions about how we engage with communities in the past and present.
