Summary

It is time to rethink accountability systems that are based largely on high-stakes tests. Adaptive learning technology can fully integrate fair and useful assessments into instruction. Blurring the lines between testing and learning allows us to focus on more authentic performance tasks, rather than multiple-choice questions. Students will spend less time testing and more time learning. “Teaching to the test” becomes just “teaching.” With perspectives from industry, academia and policy, this panel will discuss the advantages, disadvantages and barriers to using adaptive learning systems to satisfy accountability requirements while supporting instructional and organizational improvements.
