Summary

My session idea is an interactive poetry workshop showcasing the ways poetry can be taught in a special education setting. In my weekly workshops at the Rebecca School for Autism, students use poetry to advocate for themselves as they become creative thinkers and writers. The model workshop I propose takes participants through a sample warm-up activity, then delves into the reading of two poems, and ends with a writing prompt to mimic the workshops I run with students. Throughout the presentation the audience is given examples of student work as well as concrete tools—a reading list, sensory activities, and workshop topics—to help implement this kind of workshop in in their own classrooms.
