Summary

A free and open Internet is more than a technology platform. It's a foundation for free speech, free expression, democracy and individual opportunity. But the Internet is under threat. Openness and freedom online are being eroded by governments creating bad or uninformed tech policy and by tech companies creating monopolies and walled gardens. To protect the web, we need to make web literacy a mainstream issue. We need to teach everyday Internet users how read, write and participate online. We need to introduce web literacy into public education. (Think: Reading. Writing. Arithmetic. Internet.) And we need to broaden understanding of issues like encryption and online privacy and security.
