The Music Classroom as a Social Justice Playground
Tuesday, March 7
4:15PM - 4:45PM
Austin Convention Center - Ballroom EFG
NYC Department of Education - Music for Social Consciousness Educator
In this hands on workshop, we will study a masterwork by Afro-Brazilian percussion ensemble Olodum, and create musical activities that transform our classrooms into safe and fertile playgrounds for social justice. The games provide interpersonal connections, opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue and the musical skills necessary for students to come together as a community. Through play, we will explore as a community how to empower our students to become activists through music making. At the end, participants will create an original composition that they will perform as a response to an agreed upon topic around an oppressive systems that is systematically embedded in their community.
