This session presents the pedagogy of “Can AI Make Art?”, a first-year theatre seminar from fall 2023 and potentially the first college course devoted to human/AI theatrical co-creation for a novice cohort. Coursework incorporated AI (ChatGPT, Dall-E, etc.) to develop textual and audiovisual components of embodied storytelling, such as tableau narratives, cut-up spoken word, site-specific climate scenework, and Turing Test monologues. Students generally came to use AI as a resource for rapid development and overcoming the fear of the blank page, while maintaining high level artistic vision.
