How Youth Use GenAI: Time to Rethink Plagiarism

Schools are locked in a battle with students, banning GenAI because of plagiarism. Working directly with students, we co-designed a GenAI writing tool to reframe AI use. We’ll share three strategies that not only prevent plagiarism but also teach students how to use GenAI: (1) Build Self-Efficacy with AI: Give automatic rubric-based feedback, without giving away the answers; (2) Transparency: Measure how much a student copied and reward the time they spent; (3) Self-Reflection: Encourage students to reflect and report on their GenAI use, fostering accountability and awareness.
