Supporting & Identifying BIPOC Students for Gifted Programs

The lack of cultural adaptation of gifted classrooms can have detrimental effects on the child of color’s self-efficacy, and in turn, interpersonal dynamics within classrooms and schools. To close the gap of BIPOC students, specifically Black, in accelerated coursework, one must create an environment that enriches and cultivates the students to augment success. As more educators are changing academic structures to be more equitable, identifying specific gifted criteria used to identify gifted students that are culturally responsive is vital in increasing the percentages of BIPOC students.
