Confronting Our Bias Against Childhood
Societal norms don’t honor childhood. Culturally, we view childhood as bootcamp for adulthood where we have a limited amount of time to teach them a lifetime of rules. What if we gave children those years to develop their own sense of self and lay the groundwork for a society we can’t yet imagine? Piaget said, “Do we want children who are only capable of knowing what is already known?” Without freedom during these low risk, high impact years, children can only hope to know what is already known.
